Customs & Import Information
Moving from the UK to Spain requires customs declarations since Brexit. We handle all the paperwork — here's what you need to know.
Spain is an EU member. Since Brexit, UK residents relocating to Spain must go through Spanish customs (AEAT — Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria). The "Transferencia de Residencia" exemption allows household effects to be imported duty and VAT free when certain conditions are met.
Documents You'll Need
- Detailed inventory in Spanish ("lista detallada de efectos personales y del hogar")
- NIE certificate ("Número de Identidad de Extranjero") — essential for all Spanish customs
- Empadronamiento (municipal registration certificate) or rental/purchase contract
- Proof of UK departure — tenancy end, utility bill closures, or bank statements
- Completed AEAT Form 790 Code 012 (ToR tax exemption application)
- Passport or national ID
Customs Tips
- Obtain your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) before your move — it's required for customs and almost everything else in Spain.
- Register on the Padrón Municipal (empadronamiento) as soon as you arrive.
- Items must have been owned and used for 12+ months to qualify for ToR duty-free import in Spain (stricter than other EU countries).
- If moving to the Canary Islands — note they are outside the EU VAT area and have separate customs rules.
- We have established relationships with Spanish customs agents (Agentes de Aduanas) in major ports and cities.
We handle the paperwork. Rhino Removals works with licensed customs agents on both sides of the border. We prepare all required documentation, submit declarations, and guide you through the process from start to finish.

How the Moving Process Works
Spain is one of the UK's most popular retirement and lifestyle destinations. The move requires your NIE number and Spanish customs compliance. Here's the full process for a UK to Spain removal.
Step 1
Book 10–12 Weeks Ahead
Spain is a long-distance move with fortnightly departures on the 2nd and 4th Monday. Summer and autumn months are extremely busy — book well ahead for a smooth move.
Step 2
Get Your NIE Certificate First
Your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is mandatory for Spanish customs and for almost everything in Spain. Apply at the nearest Spanish consulate in the UK — allow 4–6 weeks.
Step 3
Prepare a Spanish Inventory
Spanish customs require a detailed inventory in Spanish ("lista detallada de efectos personales y del hogar"). We prepare this for you. Items must have been owned and used for 12+ months (stricter than most EU countries).
Step 4
AEAT Customs Declaration
We submit your "Transferencia de Residencia" declaration via AEAT (Spanish Tax Agency). Your NIE, empadronamiento or rental contract, and bilingual inventory are all required.
Step 5
Long-Distance Road or Ferry Transit
Spain moves travel via France and the Pyrenees, or take the Bilbao/Santander ferry. Journey time is 4–7 days depending on your destination. We use experienced long-haul drivers familiar with the route.
Step 6
Delivery and Empadronamiento
After delivery, register on the Padrón Municipal (empadronamiento) at your local Ayuntamiento immediately. This is needed for healthcare, banking, and completing customs clearance.
