Customs & Import Information
Moving from the UK to Netherlands requires customs declarations since Brexit. We handle all the paperwork — here's what you need to know.
The Netherlands is an EU member. Since Brexit, UK residents moving to the Netherlands must complete customs import procedures via the Dutch Customs (Douane). The "Transfer of Residence" (ToR) exemption applies to personal effects being moved as part of a change of habitual residence.
Documents You'll Need
- Detailed inventory ("inboedellijst") — Dutch customs require specificity
- Proof of registration at Dutch municipality (BRP inschrijving) or rental contract
- Proof of UK departure — utility bill closure, tenancy end, or deregistration
- Completed Dutch customs Form DT-10 or equivalent ToR declaration
- Passport or national ID
- BSN (Burgerservicenummer) if already registered in the Netherlands
Customs Tips
- Register with your local Dutch municipality (gemeente) as soon as possible — your BSN is needed for customs.
- The Dutch Customs (Douane) AGS system processes declarations electronically — we submit these on your behalf.
- Goods must have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months before the move.
- Bicycles are common household goods in the Netherlands — we're experienced at transporting them safely.
We handle the paperwork. Rhino Removals works with licensed customs agents on both sides of the border. We prepare all required documentation, submit declarations, and guide you through the process from start to finish.

How the Moving Process Works
The Netherlands is one of the UK's most accessible European removal destinations thanks to the Harwich–Hook of Holland overnight ferry. The Dutch are highly organised — and so is the moving process.
Step 1
Book 6–8 Weeks Ahead
We depart every Wednesday. The Harwich–Hook of Holland ferry is very popular — book early for summer moves. Hull–Rotterdam is the alternative for Northern England and Scotland.
Step 2
Register for Your BSN
Your BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is issued when you register with your Dutch gemeente (municipality). You can pre-register at the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) before arrival if needed for customs.
Step 3
Prepare Your Inboedellijst
Dutch customs require a detailed "inboedellijst" (household goods list). We prepare this for you — every item should be listed with description and estimated value.
Step 4
Dutch Customs AGS Declaration
We submit your Transfer of Residence declaration electronically via the Dutch AGS customs system, handled by our licensed Douane-expediteur partners. Items must have been owned for 6+ months.
Step 5
Overnight Ferry Transit
Most Netherlands moves use the Harwich–Hook of Holland overnight crossing. Your goods travel safely in the vehicle hold. Door delivery typically follows the morning after the ferry crossing.
Step 6
Delivery and Gemeente Registration
Register with your local gemeente as soon as possible after arrival. Your BSN is needed for banking, healthcare registration, and customs clearance completion.
Your Moving Checklist
- Register with your Dutch gemeente to obtain your BSN
- Prepare detailed inventory ("inboedellijst") for customs
- Apply for Transfer of Residence (ToR) customs relief
- Notify HMRC of your UK departure
- Register with DigiD for Dutch online government services
- Arrange Dutch health insurance (verplichte zorgverzekering)
- Open a Dutch bank account
- Transfer your UK driving licence to Dutch licence within 185 days
Removals to Netherlands: Frequently Asked Questions
UK to Netherlands removals typically take 2–3 days door-to-door. We depart weekly every Wednesday, primarily using the Harwich–Hook of Holland overnight ferry or the Channel Tunnel via Belgium. We serve Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and all Dutch cities.
AGS (Automated Goods System) is the Dutch electronic customs platform. All goods entering the Netherlands must be declared through AGS. We work with licensed Dutch customs brokers (Douane-expediteurs) who submit declarations on your behalf — you do not need to interact with the system directly.
You do not need a BSN before your move, but you should register with your local Dutch gemeente (municipality) as soon as you arrive. Your BSN (Burgerservicenummer) will be issued at registration and is needed for customs clearance of your household goods. We can time your delivery around your registration date.
Yes — bicycles are common household items and we are very experienced transporting them. They are loaded in our purpose-built vehicles alongside your other household goods at no extra cost, provided they are standard pedal cycles. Electric bikes and cargo bikes can also be accommodated; please mention them when booking.
